The award stresses editorial leadership as well as community service above and beyond a member's circulation area. Entries will be judged on evidence of a significant effort beyond the member's routine scope; the initiative of the member; use of editorials in connection with the project or projects; and results - what was accomplished? The Cadet Newspaper at the Virginia Military Institute is the first student newspaper to win this award in its 75 year history. The period covered by the contest is January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2022. The Cadet Foundation, a 501c3 operated by Cadets and Alumni and The Cadet Newspaper, where Cadets have full editorial control, are proudly separate and independent from both the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and the VMI Alumni Agencies to support the needs of Cadets.
