Legacy of a Legend: Wiley Clapp '57

On a sweltering day in Vietnam in the mid-1960s, during a search-and-destroy operation, Capt. Wiley Clapp '57 boarded a Huey following a contested landing. Aboard the Huey and before battle, Clapp was tapped on the shoulder by a crewman who relayed, "Sir, the pilot wants to have a word with you." Clapp made his way forward to the cockpit, where the pilot raised his visor. It was Bill "Wild Willie" Huffcut '57, his Brother Rat from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). "Good luck," Huffcut said simply. "Thanks, BR," Clapp replied, before turning to rejoin his platoon. That fleeting exchange between two VMI men in the chaos of combat, recounted to The Cadet by Wiley's Brother Rat George Sydnor '57, tells much about Wiley Mitchell Clapp Jr. It reveals the bonds of the Institute, the steadiness of a Marine officer, and the humility of a man who, by the time of his death in 2025 at age 90, would be remembered as a soldier, a lawman, and one of America's most respected firearms writers. Roots in Virginia, Childhood in CaliforniaClapp was born in 1935 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, though his family's roots reached deep into Virginia. Records researched indicate his great-great-grandfather, Dr. Earl Bourne Clapp, served as a surgeon in the War of 1812 and settled in Abingdon, where successive generations of Clapps became leading citizens. As recounted by his widow, Wiley's father joined the Army at the age of 17, eventually serving in the horse cavalry, serving in World War I, and riding with General "Blackjack" Pershing and even pursuing Pancho Villa on the Punitive Expedition Campaign under the guidance of General Pershing and Lieutenant George Patton, eventually retiring as a warrant officer. Wiley Jr., however, grew up far from the Blue Ridge, in Pomona, California. There, he enjoyed a boyhood steeped in the outdoors. As he once recalled to Guns – Ammo – Tactical Daily, in the 1940s, "you could still shoot a .22 in the orange groves" of Southern California. His parents, Wiley Sr. and Jessie Clapp, supported his early interest in leadership and service. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Wiley lived with his family in the Pomona, California, Armory while his father, then retired from the Army, secured it. At Pomona High School, he was a sports writer for the Pomona High School Chronicle student newspaper as well as treasurer of a community service club, roles that foreshadowed the discipline, reliability, and writing skills others would later admire. The Cadet Years at VMI.In 1953, at age 18, Clapp made a decision: he would travel across the country to Lexington, Virginia, to attend VMI. Family ties to Virginia likely may have influenced the decision, but the choice also reflected a desire for the rigors of military life. The Institute he entered met his desires with its Spartan lifestyle and deep tradition. "Devoted to the Institute and the Marine Corps" from the start, as his classmates later described in his VMI Bomb yearbook first class bio, Clapp embraced the challenge. Clapp majored in English while navigating the military requirements of the Marine Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC). After his first year, he faced credit deficiencies in trigonometry and chemistry—routine hurdles at VMI in that era. In an exchange typical of his style, Wiley bantered with the administration over the issue. "Dear Sir," He wrote the Dean at the time. "…I am listed as being deficient in Trigonometry 102. I don't see how I can be credited three hours deficient in this course when I haven't even taken it." After some back-and-forth involving other grades and course prerequisites in Chemistry, Wiley and the Dean agreed on a solution. Rather than cut him loose, VMI placed him on cadre and decided he would "live in the barracks during the re-examination period," a rare vote of confidence in his leadership potential. He recovered and thrived. By his First Class year, he held cadet rank as a Second Lieutenant. He joined the English Society, Westminster Fellowship, and played Rat football among other things. The Bomb yearbook of 1957 summed him up with affection: "'Ole Wals' came here devoted to the Institute and Marine Corps and will undoubtedly leave the same way. He has done much for this school and also has received a great deal from it. Wiley has been, and always will be, a friend to all who know him. The Marine Corps will get a fine man and a great leader when it receives Wiley." On June 11, 1957, Wiley Clapp graduated with a bachelor's degree in English and took his commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marine Corps Years (1957–1969)At Quantico, Clapp completed the Marine Corps Basic School, a six-month course that forged platoon leaders from fresh lieutenants. A 1958 release confirmed his graduation, noting him as the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley G. Clapp of Pomona, Calif. Assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines (3/7), Clapp led platoons through training maneuvers and deployments. By 1960, he was a first lieutenant; by the early 1960s, he had become a captain. Along the way, he married Jeanne—"Jean" to friends, "Nan" to family—in Reno, Nevada. In a 1962 Alumni Reunion booklet, his classmates wrote: "Wiley has been a gung-ho marine since he traded the gray for the green back in June, 1957. Among his many jobs, he gives courses in Evasion, Escape and Survival Tactics, tricks picked up no doubt running the block. Wiley Married Jeanne in Reno, Nevada, (that's a switch!) and we haven't been able to coax them East. Hope to see you back in Lexington someday." When the U.S. committed combat forces to Vietnam in 1965, Capt. Clapp deployed with 3/7. He initially led a platoon but soon extended his tour and took command of a rifle company comprising approximately 150 Marines. Aggressiveness tempered with care for his men defined his leadership in combat. Fellow Marines recalled that "he experienced intense combat in Vietnam and always led his Marines through their fights with minimum casualties". The aforementioned anecdote with "Wild Willie" Huffcut, visor up in a Huey cockpit, exchanging a brief word, epitomized the bonds of Brotherhood under fire and forged through shared suffering. By 1969, after 12 years of service, Capt. Clapp chose to muster out. By then, he'd served two combat tours and won a bronze star with "V device" for valor. The Law Enforcement Years (1969–mid-1980s)Clapp entered the Orange County Sheriff's Department in 1969, a time when Southern California was undergoing rapid change: Disneyland had opened, suburbs were expanding, and crime rates were increasing. Vietnam veterans such as Wiley filled police academies, bringing combat seasoning to local streets. For Clapp, the transition was seamless. Colleagues described him as disciplined, fair, and unflappable — "Wiley brought depth and authenticity to everything he did," one later Shooting Illustrated tribute said. The 1970s and '80s were turbulent years for law enforcement, but Clapp's approach earned him a reputation for steady professionalism. He served nearly two decades, reaching supervisory rank, before retiring in the mid-1980s. That year, he also published his first significant book on firearms. The Writer, Editor, and Firearms Authority (mid-1980s–2020s)In 1986, Clapp co-authored The Gun Digest Book of 9mm Handguns, as the 9mm cartridge was gaining prominence. He quickly became a field editor for Gun World, then a regular contributor to Shooting Illustrated, American Rifleman, and other titles. His style was distinctive: knowledgeable yet plainspoken, always touched with humor. "He had an uncanny ability to captivate readers," one editor said, "delivering a savory mix of history, humor, and insight in every word". His back-page column "Fightin' Iron" ran in Shooting Illustrated for more than 20 years, becoming the magazine's most popular page. There, he wrote about defensive handguns, training, and history, always stressing essentials: "everything you need, nothing you don't". This mentality was further present in his collaborations with manufacturers. Ruger released "Wiley Clapp GP100" variants, and Colt produced Wiley Clapp CCO and Commander 1911s. He authored or co-authored multiple books, including Modern Law Enforcement: Weapons and Tactics (1987) and Concealed Carry: The Shooter's Guide to Selecting Handguns (2002). Each reflected not just research but lived experience.By the 2000s, Clapp was an elder statesman. In 2018, he wrote on the Colt Python's history; in 2022, Gunsite Academy dedicated a training classroom in his name, honoring him as an icon and "a great American". Later Years, Passing, and LegacyWiley Clapp's legacy spans three spheres: VMI cadet and alumnus; Marine officer and Vietnam veteran; lawman and nationally read gun writer. His name lives on in thoughtfully spec'd factory firearms, in pages read by generations of shooters, and in the memories of Marines and deputies who observed his quiet leadership and insistence on essentials. In retirement, Clapp and Jeanne settled in Minden, Nevada. On June 5, 2025, he died at home at age 90 from complications of diabetes. His widow wrote simply in the Nevada Appeal: "He wore many hats in his lifetime". Shooting Illustrated headlined its tribute, "We Are Diminished," and described him as "a leader…with distinction," reflecting on his three intertwined careers. The VMI alumni community also remembered him, honoring his service in the Marine Corps and his lifelong embodiment of the Institute's values. His BR George Sydnor recalled Wiley's first night in barracks on September 13, 1953. "As he lay in his hay that night," Sydnor wrote to The Cadet, "Wiley was heard to say, 'I am in the right place'." Clapp never compromised the VMI ethos and leaves behind a rich and storied legacy. The Marines he commanded and served with remember that he cared for their lives. The deputies respected his calm demeanor, editors cherished his prose, readers trusted his wisdom, and the gun industry valued his expertise. One fellow Marine and VMI '71 alumnus wrote upon hearing of his death: "Rest in peace for eternity. You have accomplished MUCH more than required". For a man who never sought the spotlight, that was perhaps the tribute he would have cherished most.
