VMI by the Numbers: What's Changed Since 2018 in Admissions, Diversity, and Standards

Three official Virginia Military Institute (VMI) documents—Board of Visitors admissions objectives (Jan. 28, 2022), a DEI reaffirmation report (May 2021), and the Academic Standards compendium (2018–2025)—show how the Institute set recruiting goals, implemented diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and adjusted academic rules over the last several years. Here is what they have to say. Admissions: class size, women/URP targets, and an evolving blend In January 2022, the Board of Visitors reviewed "Mission Focus and Objectives" for admissions. The goals: enroll ≥ 500 new cadets each year, keep the acceptance rate near 55%, and maintain yield above 50%. VMI also aimed to raise women in the Corps to 20% within five years and cadets from Underrepresented Populations (URP)—defined by SCHEV to include low-income Pell recipients, first-generation students, specific domicile, and minority race/ethnicity—to 40% in the same period. The plan also targeted 55% out-of-state cadets, continued emphasis on producing commissioned officers, more ROTC scholarship matriculants, and a balanced mix of STEM and non-STEM majors. The activity list behind those goals included adding an optional race/ethnicity question on the application (2021–22 cycle), larger name-buy marketing, direct mail to ~25,000 prospects, virtual/in-person recruiting, and expanded high-school outreach—especially to schools with higher URP populations. DEI: metrics, governance, and symbolic changes VMI's 2021 DEI report documented longer-term trends and policy steps. Cadets of color in each entering class rose from 12.7% (1992) to 23.4% (2020); total URP enrollment went from 29% (2014) to 35% (2020). Female six-year graduation rates improved from 65% to 79% (2009–2018), and women comprised ~12–15% of incoming classes, peaking at 17% in 2018. Staff and governance changes involved the establishment of a BOV DEI Committee (Oct. 2020) and the appointment of a Chief Diversity Officer with responsibility to the superintendent. Superintendent Maj. Gen. Cedric Wins—confirmed April 2021—also conducted at least 24 listening sessions with cadets, faculty, staff, and alumni. The BOV transformed commemorations and memorials: it removed the Stonewall Jackson statue (vote in Oct. 2020; new home considered for New Market Battlefield in 2021), renamed the commemorative event the Memorial Parade (first held May 14, 2021), and removed/ended parts of New Cadet Orientation at New Market. Academically, the report cites a new core element on the U.S. Civil Rights movement ("American Civic Experience") and reviews of history offerings, alongside DEI-related training and resources across ROTC, the Commandant's office, Title IX, HR, Institutional Research, and the Center for Leadership & Ethics. Academic Standards: what stayed the same—and what changed Across versions (2018–2025), three pillars repeat: maintain required GPA, meet cumulative credit-hour benchmarks by class, and (in most years) earn at least 24 new hours across fall/spring/summer. For example, the 2021–22 standards require 24 new hours, plus GPA and hour minimums by class. The 2025–26 standards reiterate the 24-hour expectation for that cycle. Academic probation & suspension. Cadets falling short of the published standards can be probationed; achieving them by the end of the term reestablishes good standing. Three probation semesters in a row invoke suspension (readmission necessary). "Blue Book" restrictions for probationed cadets involve no full-class privileges, no weekends/days (except in exceptional circumstances -- Dean approval), no rank, and restrictions on extracurriculars (NCAA/club sports excluded). A second academic suspension causes dismissal. By-class thresholds (2025–26). The current table defines "good standing" and "probation—min to return" for each class. Illustratively: Third Class: Good standing 1.80 CUM GPA/28 hours; probation to return 1.45 CUM GPA/24 hours.Second Class: Good standing 2.00 CUM GPA/55 hours; probation to return 1.65 CUM GPA/50 hours.First Class: In good standing 2.00 CUM & major GPA/82 hours; probationary status to return 1.85 CUM & major GPA/78 hours.The paper also mentions cadets returning in the spring as being under probation if below the good-standing threshold. Financial-aid (SAP) rule revision. Old rules (e.g., 2021–22) required 80% of registered activity and completion within 10 semesters. For 2025–26 and later years, the SAP threshold list has 67% of registered activity and a maximum period of 12 semesters. Readmission. Minimum readmission standards scale by semesters finished; in the 2025 table, they begin with 12 hours/1.45 GPA following one semester and go up to 2.00 GPA with eight semesters (and for ninth/122 hours). NCAA eligibility. Cadet-athletes also have to satisfy NCAA academic/competition requirements each term to be eligible. What this means for candidates and cadets VMI will take measurements of itself against the 2022 BOV goals of class size, yield, women's share, URP share, and out-of-state mix while maintaining the outreach strategies described above. The current cadets should monitor their position on the by-class GPA/hour table and be familiar with the probation → suspension ladder and Blue Book thresholds. The recipients of this assistance will observe the SAP modification (from 80%/10 semesters previously to 67%/12 semesters in the new document). Bottom line: VMI is setting specific recruiting targets, tracking DEI achievement and policy steps, and tightening/defining the academic process—particularly how probation, readmission, and aid eligibility intersect with class-by-class GPA and credit standards.
