VMI Rugby's Next Generation Steps Up

Editor's Note: As a Co-editor-in-Chief of The Cadet and a fan of Keydet athletics across NCAA and Club, I asked members of VMI's Rugby Club coaches and cadets to comment on the upcoming season to write an article. With many answers, I was left very impressed by 1/C Nicholas Eynon '26's comments on this upcoming season, and to my surprise, a message for his teammates and fans alike. I was thoroughly impressed and, with Cadet Eynon's permission, I can share his thoughts with you. I am truly excited for this upcoming season. Not only for my senior season. Not only because I get to play rugby once again. But for the future of VMI rugby. We had many seniors depart last season. Great leadership qualities in Chuck and James. Unmatched talent in Dom and Vinny. But they left behind their wisdom. Wisdom that won't be wasted by this younger team. We also can't forget the fact that VMI rugby is a unique rugby club; qualities that are not displayed across the country by other clubs. We have that warfighter mentality hovering over us every minute. We live it. We breathe it. It's in everything we do; on and off the rugby pitch. We also embody our "ancestors" every time we lace up our cleats and apply our war stripes. Why do you think we always have an alumni game every year? Without fault? We carry their energy with us through every step, every scrum, every lineout, and every field goal. So, yes, we had to say goodbye to some great rugby players and even greater men. But with the way the Keydets play rugby, are they really gone? We have the chance to develop the near future of VMI rugby. With JP Adams at the helm, his leadership and guidance will develop the young "newbies" into the great players we get to talk about someday. Gabe Hage's energy and Josh Oludoyi's poise when it comes to tackling and running will keep the mission in the minds of the "trainees." The precision of Nate Howerton's leg or Tom Maxwell's decision-making with the ball will guide the team and foster greatness with the little details that quickly add up to success. So with this, I encourage everyone to tap into the vast resources our team has to offer; our leadership, greatness, legacy, and so on—regardless of class, position, experience, or opponent. In summary, yes, I am excited for our upcoming season.
