ISI Collegiate Network editor's conference

From October 6-8, approximately 100 students representing 55 publications from across the Nation attended the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's (ISI) Collegiate Network (CN) Editor's Conference in Alexandria, VA. Operating for the past 28 years under ISI and an additional 15 years prior, the Collegiate Network continues to support its journalists' mission to "focus public awareness on the politicization of American college classrooms, curricula, and student life… [and to] raise the level of discourse on campus and provide an outlet for students to keep university faculty and administrations honest." In addition to the wonderful opportunities for peer-to-peer connections, the conference included lectures and breakout sessions from a range of eminent journalists. Speakers such as Sterling Beard, Lee Edwards, Philip Chalk, Mark Hemingway, Kelly Jane Torrance, and more informed attendees on topics including general tips for a college paper, physical layout and design, investigative reporting, social media presence. The keynote speakers provided wonderful accounts of their careers and provided invaluable takeaways. There is no question that the conference provided something that resonated with every individual in attendance. "I am honored to have been able to attend and represent The Cadet, whose first-class editor's were at their respective Army and Marine Corps FTXs that weekend," said Bartmann "As someone who only became acquainted with journalism through my time with The Cadet, it was an invaluable learning and networking experience, and hopefully my first of many Collegiate Network conferences."
