The tradition of a Code of a Cadet

&emsp;&emsp;Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is an institute that holds fast to many of its traditions. However, these traditions are no stranger to evolving with the dynamic world that the Institute finds itself in. One of these most recent changes is the Code of a Cadet; a code Rats are expected to memorize so that it will guide their actions and their futures both in and beyond the Institute. The Code changes over time as all things do, although it is important to hold true to the values expressed within the code and promote deeper change within Cadets rather than things that appear superficial. Change may be a necessary constant; however, VMI may not have to suppress its traditions. In fact, it may be able to return to an even older age and tradition; an age where VMI was the image of honor and discipline.&emsp;&emsp;Before the Code of a Cadet was created, there existed The Code of a Gentleman created by the Corps of Cadets themselves in the Institute's earliest days. In its preamble, this code emphasized the accountability of a cadet's personal principles and his presentation where it states, "The honor of a gentleman demands the inviolability of his word, and the incorruptibility of his principles." The Code then goes on to emphasize the importance of treating everyone with civility as well as adhering to the highest degree of standard when conducting oneself in the public eye. These principles are central to the development of cadets and the idea of "citizen soldiers" exalted by current and past administrations. The intent of this code is to present a baseline set of rules and principles that establish and guide a cadet's morality. The Code of a Gentleman holds to more traditional language and values, targeted at a male audience seeing as the Corps was still all-male at the time of its use, but its standards can apply equally to both men and women cadets. &emsp;&emsp;This Code of Conduct was created and was extant at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), circa 1839–1997:&emsp;&emsp; Without a strict observance of the fundamental Code of Honor [cf., that a gentleman does not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate those who do], no man, no matter how 'polished', can be considered a gentleman. The honor of a gentleman demands the inviolability of his word, and the incorruptibility of his principles. He is the descendant of the knight, the crusader; he is the defender of the defenseless and the champion of justice… or he is not a Gentleman. A Gentleman… Does not discuss his family affairs in public or with acquaintancesDoes not speak more than casually about his girlfriendDoes not go to a lady's house if he is affected by alcohol. He is temperate in the use of alcoholDoes not lose his temper; nor exhibit anger, fear, hate, embarrassment, ardor, or hilarity in publicDoes not hail a lady from a club window.A gentleman never discusses the merits or demerits of a ladyDoes not mention names exactly as he avoids the mention of what things costDoes not borrow money from a friend, except in dire need. Money borrowed is a debt of honor, and must be repaid as promptly as possible.Debts incurred by a deceased parent, brother, sister or grown child are assumed by honorable men as a debt of honorDoes not display his wealth, money, or possessionsDoes not put his manners on and off, whether in the club or in a ballroom. He treats people with courtesy, no matter what their social position may beDoes not slap strangers on the back nor so much as lay a finger on a ladyDoes not 'lick the boots of those above' nor 'kick the face of those below' him on the social ladderDoes not take advantage of another's helplessness or ignorance and assumes that no gentleman will take advantage of him.A Gentleman respects the reserves of others, but demands that others respect those which are his.A Gentleman can become what he wills to be… &emsp;&emsp;The last line echoes Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson's words on the arch into old barracks that formerly held his name. "You may be whatever you resolve to be". Providing a strong reminder to all Cadets that it is within their ability and duty to become better men and women. &emsp;&emsp;Rather than discredit The Code of a Gentleman, these aspects reinforce the idea that this code, or at the very least one similar to it, remains pertinent to the development of educated and honorable men and women. While less direct in its reference to social issues, it addresses these topics in a more mild-mannered and indirect way, presenting the idea that by following these tenets, cadets will naturally rise above social norms and exude a higher class of morality. This concept of a "higher class of morality" is what sets apart VMI cadets from other individuals and is intrinsic to their identity as well as that of the school and the VMI experience itself. In this context, the increasing preference to direct language within the Code of the Cadet seems subpar in some areas as it emphasizes areas that are undeniably important to being generally a good person at a basic level, yet may detract from this idea of achieving and maintaining a higher morality. &emsp;&emsp;This higher morality is mirrored in the inscription on the parapet by Col. J.T.L Preston in stating VMI is The healthful and pleasant abode of a crowd of honorable youths pressing up the hill of science with noble emulation, A gratifying spectacle, an honor to our country and our state. Objects of honest pride to their instructors and fair specimens of citizen soldiers, attached to their native state, proud of her fame and ready in time of deepest peril to vindicate her honor or defend her rights. The original Code of a Gentleman did have the impact of shaping the social and moral dialog in society for decades. It was referenced and quoted by religions including the Catholic church and followed alum into their planes of service following the Institute, remaining close to heroes such as George Marshall and the many Medal of Honor recipients. Although the Code changes over time, it is essential that its message holds true to that of the original, to be an individual of higher morality. &emsp;&emsp;The Current iteration of the Code of a Cadet as seen in the 2023 Rat Bible reads: A VMI Cadet lives by the Honor Code, which states a Cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. A cadet is also expected to live honorably in accordance with the code of a cadet. Both codes demanded the inviolability of actions and words and the incorruptibility of VMI principles. The Code A cadet's word is their bond.A cadet embodies integrity at all times.A cadet is a leader of character who offers equal respect, treatment, and understanding to all.A cadet stands against intolerance, prejudice, discrimination, hate, and oppression.A cadet productively communicates, lives, and works with people from many backgrounds.A cadet finds sacred duty to country, state, the Corps, family, and friends.A cadet embodies a philosophy of physical well-being.Good manners, grace, proper humor, and humility are commonplace characteristics of a cadet.A cadet is appropriate in speech, habits, and dress.A cadet never takes counsel of their fears. A VMI cadet is a well-mannered, respectful, and properly presented individual who holds themself and others accountable for their actions and words as a valued member of the Corps. VMI standards are high for a meaningful purpose; to produce leaders of character. A cadet wears the VMI uniform with pride, always remembering and demonstrating what it means to be a VMI cadet. &emsp;&emsp;If it becomes necessary to state that Cadets must provide equal opportunity to all, not partake in racist or sexist activities, etc. does that uphold the standard of rising above basically good people, or does it become more of a backwards evolution? These principles are, of course, important, but do they really encapsulate what it means to be a Cadet? What it means to be "fair specimens of citizen-soldiers" and a "crowd of honorable youths"? Perhaps we at VMI should continue this tradition of looking to elevate ourselves above the current societal standard in an effort to provide an example for the rest of society and those who follow. This is not, by any means an attempt to degrade others, but to address the absence of upstanding men and women present within our society in this era. &emsp;&emsp;Perhaps then, each Cadet can truly become "the next George Marshall." &emsp;&emsp;Regardless of gender, the standards of this code and its moral intentions remain relevant to VMI cadets and what we resolve to be. "A well-mannered person is remembered for their appearance and their actions. As cadets we are proud to be held to standards higher than those of our civilian counterparts. Wear the uniform with pride, and always remember that you are an honorable gentleman or lady from the Virginia Military Institute." - 2021 Bullet
