Fiancé abandoned in Richmond Saturday, January 15, I had the privilege of attending the inaugural parade and reception for Governor Glenn Youngkin. The Cadet Newspaper staff were offered an incredible opportunity to also attend Governor Youngkin's inaugural reception, yet the snowstorm which was due to hit Lexington on Sunday afternoon unfortunately prevented cadets from attending. I was set to accompany my fiancé, editor-in-chief James Mansfield, but I was still able to make the date (without my date). The day started off on the steps of the Virginia State Capitol. After waiting in an extensive queue that snaked its way throughout the sidewalks of Richmond, I got to my seat, situated to the left of the Governor's podium. Although it was bitterly cold, I was excited to witness Governor Youngkin's swearing-in ceremony and to watch the Corps of Cadets out on parade. They looked great, especially considering the narrow path they had to navigate. I even got to see for myself the infamous Colonel Bogart, whom I have heard a great deal about. As a native of Maine, and not a resident of Virginia, I was impressed with the promises that Governor Youngkin made in his speech. Following the speech, and after a short walk through the state's capitol, I returned to my hotel room to dress down for the inaugural "ball." Per Governor Youngkin's request that attendees wear cowboy boots and Glenn vests, I donned my very own Cadet Newspaper vest. The reception was hosted at Main Street Station, a historical railway station in Richmond. When I walked into the venue, I was greeted by a bluegrass band and an immediate feeling of patriotism. The event was not at all what I expected an inaugural ball to be. The Zac Brown Band was headlining, and classic rock blasted between the opening band's sets. Attendees were simply letting loose, dancing, and having a good time. It felt more like a party than a political venue. VMI's reputation preceded her, as I was approached by a woman who wanted to express her admiration for the school and its acceptance of women, despite her never attending the Institute. Throughout the night, I was approached by numerous VMI alumni and other supporters, all of whom were very excited about the resurrection of The Cadet Newspaper. Alumni voiced that they had felt disconnected from the Institute and the true spirit of the Corps, but reading The Cadet made them feel like they were right back in barracks. One of the most impressive people I met was Tara Durant, a member of the Virginia house of delegates. She had been inaugurated just a few days prior to our meeting. She was quick to emphasize the deep respect she has for VMI and the people it produces. It stood out to me how many people cared about VMI, many without having any direct connection to the school. Even as an outsider, I can truly see the pride and reputation which the name "VMI" carries. I am really grateful to have had the pleasure of representing the newspaper and the cadets, even though I wish that they could have been there with me.
