Coast Guard FTX

During the spring semester Field Training Exercise (FTX), cadets in the Virginia Military Institute's (VMI) Coast Guard Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program traveled to Baltimore, Maryland, for a multi-day professional development experience at "Sector Maryland." The trip marked a significant step forward for the Coast Guard detachment at VMI, offering opportunities and exposure that go beyond what has been conducted in previous years. The FTX began on post with preparation and accountability. On the first day, cadets conducted a detailed packing list inspection in the New Barracks courtyard to ensure all required gear and uniforms were present. This initial formation set the tone for the week, emphasizing discipline, attention to detail, and readiness. Following the inspection, cadets participated in classroom-level instruction designed to prepare them for what they would encounter during their visit. Topics included Coast Guard mission sets, expectations for interactions with active-duty personnel, and general professional development. On the second day, cadets departed for Baltimore and arrived at Sector Maryland, a major operational command within the U.S. Coast Guard. While there, cadets had the opportunity to engage directly with active-duty Coast Guard members. These interactions proved to be one of the most valuable aspects of the trip, as cadets were able to ask questions about daily life in the service, career paths, and future opportunities within the branch. For many, this was a rare chance to gain firsthand insight into what their potential futures could look like beyond VMI. The third day of the FTX focused on operational exposure. Cadets traveled to Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay, where they conducted a tour of the surrounding waters. During the tour, cadets observed Coast Guard operations in action and gained a better understanding of maritime security and response missions. Afterward, they received instruction on the operational workings of Coast Guard vessels, including navigation, maintenance, and mission-specific equipment. This hands-on learning experience allowed cadets to connect classroom knowledge with real-world application. On the fourth day, cadets visited the Surface Forces Logistics Center, where they were introduced to the logistical backbone that supports Coast Guard operations. The morning tour highlighted how vessels are maintained, repaired, and supplied to ensure mission readiness across the fleet. Later in the day, cadets completed a shipyard tour and departmental walkthrough, gaining further insight into the coordination required to sustain operations at a high level. This portion of the FTX emphasized that the Coast Guard's effectiveness relies not only on those in the field, but also on the extensive support systems behind the scenes. The final day of the Spring FTX brought cadets back to VMI, where they concluded their training with a weapons qualification session at North Post. This exercise reinforced fundamental skills and served as a practical conclusion to a week focused on both professional development and operational exposure. For many cadets, the experience was both memorable and impactful. Fourth Class Cadet Andrew R. Parkinson reflected on the trip, stating, "I loved it a lot, because we do not get to have the opportunity like this very often." His sentiment highlights the unique nature of the FTX, particularly for a smaller ROTC detachment like the Coast Guard's at VMI. Compared to larger ROTC branches on post, the Coast Guard program operates with fewer cadets, which can limit the frequency and scale of training opportunities. However, this year's FTX demonstrated a clear effort to expand those opportunities and provide cadets with meaningful, hands-on experiences. Parkinson also noted, "It is unfortunate that we are such a small branch, because it is such an interesting branch to be a part of." His comment reflects both the challenges and the appeal of the Coast Guard, a branch that often receives less visibility despite its wide-ranging and critical missions. Overall, the Coast Guard FTX 2026 represented a major step forward for the program at VMI. By combining classroom preparation, direct interaction with active-duty personnel, operational tours, and hands-on training, the exercise provided cadets with a well-rounded experience that will contribute to their development as future officers. More importantly, it reinforced the value of the Coast Guard as a service branch and highlighted the unique opportunities it offers to those willing to pursue it.
