The Path to Breakout

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is defined by its many traditions; one such tradition is the Rat Line, a grueling six-month training period for new cadets, or "Rats." The Class of 2029 took their well-earned spot among the ranks of the VMI Cadets on January 24, 2026, with the completion of Breakout, the culminating event of the Rat Line that recognizes them as a class at VMI. Matriculation WeekSaturday, August 16, 2025, marked the day that the Class of 2029 matriculated into the institute. On Matriculation Day, the Rats started the morning with administrative tasks, signing their name into history on the Matriculation Book, and lastly taking the Cadet Oath in Cameron Hall before marching up into barracks. With every point of entry closed behind them, the Rats finally met their cadre, who were cadet instructors responsible for guiding them through VMI's rigorous system. During Matriculation Week, the cadre put Rats through physical training (PT), basic military drill & ceremony, and taught them the regulations, customs, and traditions of VMI. The Rat Crucible marked the end of Matriculation Week; during this event, Rats endured physically and mentally demanding exercises in a north-post circuit workout. The crucible ended with rain that would pound over the Class of 2029 as they took a swim in the Maury River. The Rat Crucible was designed to push the rats beyond their limits and foster physical and mental toughness. The brotherhood that was built throughout Matriculation Week and the Rat Crucible would sustain the rats throughout the ratline. "It was difficult but pretty fun, the most fun we had was in the river, the cadre were encouraging and having fun with us." Cadet Wells, F-Troop, Class of 2029, told The Cadet. Rat ChallengeOne of the pinnacle experiences rats have during the Rat Line is participating in Rat Challenge, a program run by cadets separate from the cadre who lead the Rats in various team-building exercises. These activities are meant to build the "Brother Rat Spirit," along with fitness and leadership skills, in a more relaxed environment than cadre time. Rat Challenge is a four-month-long program that culminates in the Rat Olympics. During this event, companies compete in a series of physical challenges to win the Stockwell Cup. With the Rat Challenge ending and the "dark ages" emerging, there would still be two more months that the rats would have to endure. The Rat Line comes into full swing with cadre training making up most of their afternoons until Breakout. BreakoutOn January 24, 2026, the day had finally come for the rats to be recognized as a class at VMI, but it would not be easy. Breakout commenced at 0500 as "Little John" shot off, waking up the entire corps and signaling the start of a monumental day for the Class of 2029. Rats were met with various workouts from all members of the corps, starting with a workout in Cocke Hall with the 3rd and 2nd classes, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) cadets took over with a circuit around the drill fields and north post. After ascending the stairway to heaven one last time, the rats conducted log exercises and began their final charge towards the barracks. Once they removed the sandbags blocking the old barracks arch, they did one final sweat party with their dykes. After the trials of Breakout, the rats gathered in Crozet Hall for their last meal as Rats. Their transition into the Corps was finalized as they marched up to the barracks, met their cadre, and completed their first Old Yell–a tradition that cemented their status as cadets at VMI.
