From Battlefields to Big Screens: Muzzle: City of Wolves Brings Grit, Loyalty, and Healing to Light

On the evening of November 5th, at a theater in northern Virginia, veterans, movie critics, friends, and family eagerly gathered to see the first screening of Muzzle: City of Wolves. Muzzle: City of Wolves tells the story of Jake Rosser, a former K-9 officer and Marine Corps veteran. Grappling with the effects of trauma from a dangerous career of self-service, and trying to rebuild his family and his strained relationship with his wife, accompanied by his faithful companion, the police dog, he is training his retired service dog. The director's vision for this movie is to tell the story of veterans and first responders, bridging the gap that many veterans face with the effects of their service on themselves and their families, in an action-packed thriller. The premiere brought together the movie's director, John Stalberg Jr., its star, Aaron Eckhart, and Robert Hess '67, the veteran sponsor, for an evening that blended Hollywood energy with real-world resonance. Their interviews reveal a shared mission: honoring the unseen battles that are carried long after the visible ones have ended. Hess stated, "on behalf of all the veterans here, John, Aaron, I want to thank you guys so much, for bringing this movie to us, ... Make us think about the themes that were in this film. And I think it really will, over time, when more people see it, help a lot of people, you know, work through their issues." Robert Hess, VMI class of 1967, and Rally4Vets sponsored the event. As previously covered in The Cadet, Hess is the founder of Rally4Vets, an organization that supports Veterans by hosting events on race tracks allowing vets to drive on extreme speeds that would land you in jail on the highway. According to the organization's website, "Rally4Vets is a series of motorsports events designed to bring together veterans, service members, and supporters to raise awareness and funds for veteran suicide prevention." The Top Dog Championship is a competitive racing series for drivers of all skill levels where teams representing different military branches go head-to-head for the title of Top Dog Champion. The organization also hosts non-racing motorsports events, such as car rallies, weekend fun drives, and car-and-coffee events, to raise funds for service dogs and other life-saving resources for veterans in need. Hess told the cadet about the organization's founding. He said, "Rally4Vets came about because of two things, the German Autobahn and Porsches. My first tour in Germany was after my first tour in Vietnam. I rotated in, I went down, I bought a 1968 Porsche 911E. But the great thing about the Autobahn in Germany, I don't know if you've been there yet. There is no speed limit." This would foster a love of the thrill of driving at high speeds. Hess would create Rally4Vets to share this passion with other Veterans. By the gracious invitation of Hess '67 and funding, coordination, and other support provided by The Cadet Foundation, made possible by the generous support from alumni and other supporters of The Cadet, Cadets Patrick Lowry '27, Hayden Barrett '27, and Dylan O'Brien '27 attended the by-invitation-only private screening in Washington, D.C. They enjoyed the singular opportunity to view the film before its release with heroic veterans and veterans support groups, as well as to interview the film's director, star, and Hess '67 himself. A Story Rooted in Trauma and Trust Muzzle: City of Wolves follows Jake Rosser, a once-decorated K-9 officer haunted by PTSD and adjusting to life with his family and the police dogs he trains. When a violent gang targets them, Rosser teams up with a new K-9 partner, Argos, and descends into a city's criminal underworld. What unfolds is part action-thriller, part emotional excavation. Stalberg stated in an interview with The Cadet, "I wanted to do is take the internal psychological obstacles for the character and externalize them as obstacles in the real world. So that was just an interesting concept to me." He went on "Okay, I may not be exactly like Jake Rosser, I've got this problem in my life. I'm going through this, I'm going through that. We're all going through stuff. But what if we were to make those problems actual obstacles based on what you said, like using the other character?" "So here's a character dealing with suicidal ideation. Well, what do they do? They make him play Russian roulette, you know, so it's like he has to actually overcome the obstacles that he's internally conflicted by. I thought that was interesting." The director researched with former officers, canine handlers, and veterans to accurately portray both the chaos of combat and the quiet moments of internal struggle. While the film features kinetic fight scenes, drug-ring conspiracies, and dark alleys, its emotional pulse lies in the bond between Rosser and his dogs. The movie's star, Aaron Eckhart, plays Jake Rosser with a mix of grit and fragility. The actor said preparing for the role required learning to think and move like someone who carries trauma in his muscles and in his memories. The actor said the most complex scenes were not the fight sequences but the quiet ones — the sleepless nights, the flashbacks, the moments when Jake pushes his family away out of fear. The Cadet explored Eckhart and Stalberg's motivations and challenges in the film: The Cadet: This movie is set in Los Angeles. It is talking about cartels. There are not a lot of stories to talk about cartels, that's kind of not really in the mainstream. Why did you choose this? What inspired you? John Stalberg Jr.: I live in LA… you look around, and there's some problems. There's problems everywhere. But the thing is, you can't solve that problem. I'm not saying I can solve a problem, especially with a movie. That's not what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to entertain, but if you can't really talk about a problem or at least show the place realistically, I don't know how you're going to ever solve the problem. So our movie character is an LAPD cop. He works downtown. -- you know the way it is. And we wanted to show it realistically. And there's a character who is a flawed character, and he's in a flawed place, you know, so that in that way, the city is a character in itself. The Cadet: Are there any personal connections that made you feel that you had to portray, like, a former retired K-9 officer with PTSD out on the big screen? John Stalberg Jr.: Well, I mean, I talked about it a little bit. I have some family that was in the military, but for me, it was just an interesting subject to tell a story about. I was wrapping a film called 'Crypto' that I did with Kurt Russell in New York. I was driving from Manhattan to the after-party, and I saw a K-9 officer in his truck talking. And as I pulled up alongside him, it was almost like a camera shot. He was in the rain. It was very cinematic. And as we passed him, he had a dog in the passenger seat, and he was talking to his dog. And the whole movie I thought, that's a cool movie. That's it. I walked into the wrap party, and the first person I saw was Carlyle Eubank, who wrote the film 'Crypto' and who wrote the first Muzzle. And I said, hey, is this a movie? The guy is talking, and you reveal he's talking to his dog. And where are they going? They're going to a crime scene. And what happens at the crime scene? The dog dies. And do you know, when dogs in the military and the police force get killed, they have a full dress funeral. He said, oh, yeah, and I didn't know that. And then he said, oh, that's cool. And I said, is that a movie? And he went, yeah, that's a movie. He said, I raised German shepherds. You know that you speak German to your dog so that, you know, suspects don't understand what the commands you're giving. So it was like this fascinating subject matter. The Cadet: Was there a point in the film where you "didn't see the edges of the screen" anymore? You didn't see the cameras? You didn't see all the other people. You became so immersed in it that you became that character? Aaron Eckhart: Yeah. It's this idea of uh having real moments and real thoughts. When you're with another actor who is communicating energy towards you, then everything goes blank, and you don't care anymore. I thought in the intimate scenes with the wife, we got near that. Also, the roulette scene where you're just in your own little bubble, and nothing else matters. When I do those, it's exhilarating. That's why I'm an actor. All the other stuff, as I said, is not unsatisfactory, but it's not as pleasing. It's not as exhilarating, and that's the fun of acting. So, it happens every so often, not all the time, but when you do it, you want to capture it. You want to get that other actor and say, "Hey, hey, that was great. Let's do that again. Let's rehearse a little bit more. Let's try it this way." Aaron Eckhart, felt called to this role; he thought that he could portray emotional struggles that many are facing. He states, "Sometimes we believe we're doing the right thing, and we're punished for it. And I love that idea. I love the fact that he's dying inside or crumbling inside and has to go to a psychiatrist, or he's trying to work it out himself." The film is a great watch; it offers insight into the effects of PTSD, both internally and within a family, while also being a thrilling, action-packed movie. Muzzle: City of Wolves is a great movie to watch with your family this holiday season.
